Feedback from participants
The 2010 Institute received many valuable comments:

It was well planned and organized. Programmes ran smoothly.
Excellent presentations, comfortable venue. Lots of interesting librarians from different places.

Too long presentation, too less activities.

The training is interesting and useful.

Case study and group discussion are good way but should not be too many.

To bring me new concept and new idea. It will contribute to the development of my library.

Very good.

Very good.

This is the best I ever attended. I enjoyed it from beginning to the end.

Group discussion is good. It helps us to understand the lessons better.

Generally, I am so completely satisfied with the conduct of the institute. It was so organized and will managed by the organizing team lead by Dr Tony Ferguson.

Well organized

Please should the time has more “warm climate”.

Partially, because some of the topics like “Strategic Planning”, “Performance Evaluation” have been touched upon quite some years ago, better to let us who have been in the field have new trends known.

The topics covered in the learning sessions and the sharing of experience among participants gave stimulation to my work.

My present work is editing, but I still enjoy the class.

Especially new concepts like cloud computing, OCLC services, Chinese Academy of Sciences, library development and transition

But most new technologies we can know but some countries may not catch up with.

The issues presented were highly related to my work, so I could be very interested in it.

Good opportunities for networking.

Very useful, informative, something that you can value for the rest of your life much more in my profession.

It will be more useful when I get a higher level.

Highly useful to my work.

I can learn more from the training and apply it to my pratical work.

All presentation were very useful and thought provoking.

Case studies and exercise are most stimulating activities. They helped us think through and clarify what we learned from the lectures.

Brainstorming exercise, but don’t allow too long time.

Case studies very useful in helping us to apply the ideas from the presentation to possible real life situations.

The case study on rebuilding the new library in Vietnam which stimulate the participants to think how to be a good director of library.

Case study. I think it can teach me some ways to solve practical work.

Group discussion is very useful to know more of other libraries are doing.

Group discussion. Promote communication among members.

Tony and Peter’s introduction broadens my eyesight and quite informative. Paul’s lectures concerning every aspect of library management are useful and helpful.

The case study is well organized, detailed and inspiring. It includes many elements that the whole workshop mentioned.

Group activities, because it was a good opportunity to get to know other librarians, and learn about the concerns of institutions other than my own, as well as having an opportunity to apply what we learned in a funny way.

Corporation in Team Seven. We know each other, and know some about their libraries’ service, and maybe I can learn more from them lately.

Case study. Reasons: Team work. Discussion between different libraries’s cooperation.

Planning for research libraries.

Study case – all participants have chance to express their ideas.

Project management is well. Library work is completed very well.

Cloud computing is a new trend in library.

Group discussion. Can practice what we learned from the class, and exchange opinions and experiences with library colleagues.

Case study. It’s useful.

Case studies, discussions, teamworks, help us to digest what we just learned from speakers, and exchange with team members.

Case group discussion

Group assignment. Because it makes you think and practice what you learn.

Team work.

Exchange the team number to recognize more partners.

How to be a good librarian and project management get the job well arranged, time saving, more efficient.

Everything is good!

Informal chats to learn about other librarians

Assignment and team work, thought-provoking, active, practical experiences from Zhang Xiaolin. Cloud computing.

All the activities have learning insights to me as an administrator and educators.

Cloud computing (and OCLC’s) was interesting.

Group discussion for case study and group rotation to know more about other people.

Group discussion.

The discussion, case study, and especially the post-it-note project management schedule exercise.

Focus group discussion. Interaction by the participants. Case study presentation.

The exercise and the discussion, because we can make a brain storming and know other ideas of the other participants.

Brain storming and discussion groups and presentations.

Planning on project management.

Project management: every know how to do by team work. Cloud computing: new concepts with clear examples etc. OCLC.

The lectures have provided the opportunity for me to refresh the general management/ planning practices. During the lecture and discussions, it made me think and re-assess the changes/opportunities ahead.

They bring new concepts, new ideas for collaboration in midst of budget and staff resources, press changing demands in new environment.

Team work – more inspiration from other classmates.

The exercise to make a project management plan for building up a digital repository worked very well in terms of group involvement and applying what we have just learnt from the facilitators.

The study case assignment was practical and related to the topics covered in the learning sessions very well.

Earth quake case study: we have no time to prepare.

Changes in groupings

The re-grouping of team. I’m from Hong Kong, but somehow I could only switch between the non-Chinese groups. Would like to have more opportunities to work with other groups.

Answer the question using English smoothly.

Every activities work well.

Not understanding some points. Because of limited time.

Measure of project management. It’s not suitable for me.

Personnel assessment, too general information.

Cloud computing. Because find idea.

Cloud computing.

All is well for me.

Back-to-back presentations, because it is hard to absorb so much information all at once, and to sit still remaining attentive for an extended period of time.

Changing table for getting to know each other is not necessary. If the person is outgoing, he/she will talk actively everywhere. If the person is quiet, he/she will not talk even the environment is changed.

It should take a rest at noon even half an hour to enhance the efficiency in the afternoon.

Some lectures such as the cloud computing and the measurement are abstract enough for me to have some blank moments and my mind just wandered off.

I was unable to fully participate in the discussions with my team because I am not affluent Putonghua speaker.

Too long talk.

The group members on day 3 and 4 were mostly the same. It would be good if there are different combination of participants in each group for day 3 and 4.

Cloud computing

I feel I am more aware of the challenges faced by librarians and possible strategies to deal with them.

I came away with the understanding of how the library as a profession can move forward and stay relevant as well as how we should look into ourselves first as a leader so we can build on our strength, avoid threat, and compensate our weaknesses.

Improve my leadership skill.

I makes me feel learning is relaxing and happy.

Some cases are useful as a benchmark in future development.

It helps me understand and learn new trends of library.

Vital for my future professional career. Better communication with classmates are necessary, and the organizer can think more about how to enhance this regard.

Many things to learn, keep updated.

This has been a wonderful experience, both personally in being able to step out of everyday business, and meet new friends, and as a professional to have a chance to spint scriens time internalizing so many new developments.

Knowledge exchange with other

New idea. To improve the level of leadership and project management.

Give me some ideas for my work.

To build self –confidence both in professional and career as librarian.

I am planning the involution management of our library.

Know many library colleagues.

Learn the way of systematically and creatively thinking. Make friends of library colleagues from different countries (people network)

It help me a lot specially for me to work as subject librarian.

Enable me to rethink my work as a cataloging librarian.

Knowing different solution for some events in other libraries.

Benefit a lot for many new knowledge.

Vision is important than any other things.

This experience is excellent!

Learn much from others, their respective, their experience.

We have to face e-content environment maybe change our behavior, etc. reading, resource, etc.

On professional level, it much help me in planning activities to enhance our service and resources.

Learn the leadership skills and know more about the works of professional librarians in different parts of areas.

Very useful. Make me think of how I can improve my management style and my supervision of staff. Excellent presentation about the HKU Scholarly Hub – very inspiring.

I feel the importance of our profession, challenging role to the profession in years to come. Now I’m very proud of my profession.

This experience will enhance my mind as a librarian to face the new dimension of the changing of library.

Many new experience learn and can be impose in my library e.g. cloud computing.

It was a very good opportunity to think of big picture of library. I could think of who I am as a librarian.

Open minded, network working with good friends from many countries.

Allows me rethink my position and contribution in my post and think of re-organising for transition.

I enjoy the classes here. The speeches inspire me. It push mu to rethink my job even my career to be a librarian.

It’s both a unique experience personally and professionally to meet other library professionals in this event which can build up relationship for future collaboration. The discussion part for each topic provided valuable sharing opportunities among participants. Wow!

Except last one, too cold!

The hotel – very good, just a little cold. Science Academy – very cold, less comfortable.

Everything is perfect except for the temperature. It is cold most of time but it is better than being too hot!

A bit crowded – 6 people in a table.

Lack of windows was unfortunate given how much time we spent there

A very pleasant and nice environment with accommodating staff.

The room was good, but the conference room was too cold.

Just except that the hotel function room is a bit overcrowded for all of us.

First time to Beijing, it’s difficult to communicate. Organizer should guide from airport to the venue (hotel). We are willing to pay cost ourselves for travel or transportation.

The venue is spacious and new. However, it would be good if all the seating are facing the screen so that every participant can see the presentations clearly.

Please keep organizing this institute. It can be very beneficial to young librairns.

The participants changed twice table in the Monday morning. However, the members were same, the table number was changed. Why? Mistake?

20-30 minutes napping maybe appear relaxing, the schedule seems too tight.

This was very inspiring! Thank you!

More courses and long time.

Thanks of organizing such a wonderful event. I learned a lot of interesting perspects.

Many inspirations, e.g. job objectives vs. job description etc.

Good! People here are all very nice. Meanwhile, I’ve learnt much by taking this wonderful institute. Thank you!

I congratulate the organizer through the leadership of Tony Ferguson and for coming up a very successful training, the 8th library leadership training! May you continue this very noble and professional academic exchange of our librarianship profession. You are helping us on the higher level to our profession. Thank you very much. May god bless you always!!!

The tuition is quite expensive for a 3-day conference, even though the contents were excellent and extremely useful. Good choice of accommodation. I didn’t really like the Chinese translation part – all participants should already possess the necessary English proficiency before registering the conference. So, I find the Chinese translation taking too much time, and interrupted the flow of the lecture. Great speakers!

I am grateful to be part of this 8th Annual Library Leadership Institute. I have a lot of things to introduce in my own country Philippines, our School of library in particular. I like the series of topics presented with expert and competent speakers. Very organized. Congratulation to the 2010 Organising Committee. It’s a new experience, new challenge and a sight on my paradigm.

The time is so tight.

Two days more is better! I hope to have more time to visit different library.

Case study presentation is good and informative. Group discussion methods is effective. Congratulations to the organizer for the success.

A very good one for refreshing our profession and views, as well as exchange of ideas. Surely will recommend to our system.

Please consider for comments in 6 next time. Group discussion we should have leader and secretary as team leader so the group discussion will work. How about the topic next time?

A very impressive and humorous award presentation. It related very well the distinctive features of individual group projects to the awards and prizes. An extensive selection of topics in the learning sessions. A big, big thank you to the Organising Committee to make this trip wonderful and rewarding.
