2015 Institute

Feedback from participants

The 2015 Institute received many valuable comments:

I learned a lot from the facilitators as well as fellow participants.

Very well planned and organized; details are attended; working team is very helpful.

Awesome arrangement. Friendly organizer & the event was very successful.

The Institute was conducted successfully.

A well organized training Institute for Asian librarians.

The facilitators’ background, knowledge and seniority combined with their ability to facilitate discussion, challenge assumptions, and help is reframe the various facets of leadership in our own context.

Timing very good, if more in-class exercise, not just speaking by facilitator more better.

I benefited from the entire programme and learned a lot about the way to think and to manage library in my position, and to understand it from the perspective of my supervisors.

The event is very useful in terms of networking among countries. Learning the culture and fundamental of leadership is fascinating, have open other eyes and mind more.

Leadership skills learned will be definitely helpful for me at work.

This Institute opened my eyes on the practical means on how to become an effective leader.

I feel this Institute not only taught me some deeper lessons about leadership but also created in me a desire to achieve more in work and in life.

A useful opportunity to interact with librarians who have to work in less favorable environments – their passion and insight remind one that complacency has no place in one’s library.

Let me know what a leader should be.

Impact on organizational culture and sharing of other countries point of view is very beneficial for my future endeavors in the librarian field. The leadership program could also benefit me as a professional to have direction and manage different people in a proper way.

It leads me to re-think the role as a leader/librarian. Besides, my teammates had also shared with me their experience and which is very useful to librarian.

It made me think different. Great! Thanks.

All of these studies, it is lifelong wealth to me.

The group project provide chance to work with participants from various countries/places.

The case study as a whole was good particularly part about marketing, which I dabble in my reference work.

Though there will be difficulties to apply theories in real world, the event is useful to me when opportunities come up as there will always be changes and improvements of library.

(1) Prefer a workshop with 5 days which has some time for self-reflection. (2) Prefer a workshop starting from Monday to Friday. (3) Want to know more about motivation – when some staff members are often having a negative view on various things but letting them go is not an option. Thank you very much for the excellent Institute.

For my English, I think if teachers can teach in simple words, I will appreciate it, thank you.

Thank you very much for organizer to conduct such a successful event which should be continued to benefit other fellow librarians.

Well organized event, facilitators are very knowledgeable and presentable.

Keep it up guys! You’ve been doing great in mentoring our professional growth for so many years. Thank you!

I hope the Institute is longer training, maybe a week or half a month.

The Institute would be better if you can leave a contact person’s cellphone on the website. So that we can get help on our arrival. Anyway, many thanks!

As a suggestion for future Institutes, and to ensure that all participants fully engage as leaders/future leaders in the program, introduce a slightly stronger selection process, e.g. for potential participants to contribute a personal statement on how they plan to make use of the Institute outcomes. While it did not bother me specifically, it seems to me that a few participants were not at all in a position to manage/lead…and were a bit in a “sit back” conference attitude rather than a leadership programme.

For my poor English, I think if I get the course materials before the Institute, I can prepare more.

The event overall is fun. I particularly like the opportunities of meeting librarians from other institutions and working with some of them to complete a project in a very short time throughout the event days. Also, thanks very much to Paul, Arnold, Peter, and all the HKU library staff for their time, effort, and sharing before and during the Institute.

A good opportunity for green and young professional librarians (with under 3 years of professional experiences) to exchange with other professional librarians outside Hong Kong.

Thank you Institute committee for this awesome experience. More power!

Thank you to organizer, speakers and all participants. I have a wonderful day here in Xiamen. Hope to see you all again.

Please keep up the great work!!

More prizes :)

The standard of English in terms of comprehension and communicating varies too much. Many could not understand what is taught and what is required from the participants. It hindered a lot the discussion and working together.

This Institute not only reminded me of the management concepts I learned before, but also stimulated me with thought-provoking ideas and discussions that expanded my horizon to be a library management.
